Never Say Never

“Never say never” is a quote I will always live by! This experience has been an amazing one to say the least! I will never forget the day I came across the Habitat for Humanity bulletin in the laundry mat. I looked at it and walked by it a few times before I actually took the phone number from it and thought to myself, maybe just maybe, I have a chance.

I arrived home that night and printed off the application and filled it out. I did a little research online before I actually sent in my application because I wasn’t really sure what Habitat for Humanity was all about. After doing some research I sent in my application. In the meantime, I was talking to a few of my family members about Habitat and I got some interesting responses. Still, not sure myself, I did some more research online.

Then one day, I received a call from a lady; they wanted to interview me and my children for Habitat! I still wasn’t getting my hopes up because I thought this was a long shot and there was no way, I, out of who knows how many other families, was going to get a home. We had our interview and they told me they were going to bring my paperwork in front of the board and that I would receive a call within the next month to let me know what their decision was.

I got a phone call one day and it was one of the ladies that had interviewed us, and she told me we were chosen to get a home through Habitat for Humanity! I think I was in shock, because all that came out of my mouth was “Oh good!” Finally, after I had some time to process that phone call, I started calling my family and telling them all the great news! Many of them told me it was like winning the lottery! Some people even told me that I was getting a free home! Well that’s not the case but it’s the next best thing. Being able to afford a home for my children is all I have ever wanted since I became a single mother. I never thought it was possible.

I would like to thank Habitat for everything! Without this program this would never have been possible for my family and many other families as well! I would like to thank the Hibbing and Chisholm High School students and the HCC students for all the hard work and dedication they put into build my home. Thank you to my friends and family for being supportive during the building and helping me out when I needed it. Debbie, my mentor, for being there when I needed her and for just being a good listener!

This house is going to make it possible for my son to get the surgery that he needs, my daughter to have her own bedroom, and for them to just be kids. For me, I can now have the confidence in myself knowing that my kids will have somewhere they can call Home because of my hard work and dedication, as well as many others! Thank you Habitat for Humanity.
