Earn an 85% tax credit and help us build affordable homes!
Thank you for your interest in the Minnesota State Housing Tax Credit!
As of February 18, 2026, applications for the tax credit have closed.
The Minnesota Housing Finance Agency received more requests for state housing tax credits than are available to issue in 2026. The limit was reached much faster than participants expected. Minnesota Housing staff will review all of the requests and contact applicants with next steps. Minnesota taxpayers requested $16 million in credits compared to the fund’s $9.9 million limit. Those who applied after the limit was reached are being put on a waitlist. Minnesota Housing will notify applicants of their contribution application status via email by March 4, 2026.
This page will remain live and will be updated once information is available about 2027 contributions.

The Minnesota State Housing Tax Credit was created in 2023 and lets Minnesota taxpayers contribute money to a dedicated housing fund. The entire contribution supports the taxpayer’s selected project. In return, contributors receive a state tax credit equal to 85% of their contribution. Part of what you already owe in taxes can be dedicated to building new, efficient homes. The minimum contribution is $1,000, making this program accessible to individual donors. Businesses and larger investors can give any amount up to $2 million. If you contribute $1,000, you receive an $850 credit that directly reduces what you owe in Minnesota taxes. Instead of a deduction for charitable giving, this is a dollar-for-dollar credit against your tax bill.
North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity has registered projects with the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency since 2024. Applications are now closed, but projects will be added or retained for 2027. Donating to these specific projects helps our entire homeownership program.
This is a popular program! We suggest completing the application as soon as it is available. You do not need to submit payment at the same time.
We’re happy to walk you through the application process once the online form is live. If you can take advantage of this opportunity, you’ll control where your tax money is spent and help ensure more of your neighbors can afford a decent place to live.

We received $61,000 from our supporters in 2024 and 2025, and our goal is $50,000 for each of our registered projects in 2026.
Here’s what some of our contributors told us about why they participated:
“I didn’t know exactly how it worked at first, but then I found out it was easy. In fact, I plan on giving more this year. It allows you to choose where your money goes and helps the people who need help.”

“I’m honored to be a financial contributor to one of North St. Louis County’s Habitat for Humanity homes through the Minnesota State Housing Tax Credit. This program allowed me to leverage a larger up-front investment to support NSLC Habitat for Humanity’s work through an 85% tax credit for my contribution. Being able to contribute directly to a Habitat home, in this case in St. Louis County, is important to me because everyone deserves a decent place to live and build community. The work Habitat does to make homeownership possible for more families is a model example of a local organization providing leadership and collaboration necessary to create opportunities for more families to have a place of their own to call home.”

The main tax credit webpage can be found on the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency’s website. That’s where you’ll find the application once it opens on February 17. You’ll also see how much has already been contributed. We aren’t kidding when we say the fund fills up fast!
